album review:

When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold
(Rhymesayers Entertainment)

[originally published in Beyond Race Magazine]

With its kinda playful title in tow, the new album from Atmosphere is kinda anything but. Lemons is the depressive morning after to the manic night before of the Minnesota duo’s previous party music album, the free-to-download Strictly Leakage. Lemons’ 15 tracks chronicle the addictions of various small town characters—addiction to cigarettes, to drugs, to the lifestyle of avoidance. MC Slug says he was trying to avoid being too autobiographical on this album, and while not all the narratives are in first person, the tales still seem to stem from the honesty of a first-hand account. Producer Ant is at his minimalist best, with more hits than misses, while Slug flows with ease over whatever soul-cum-techno-cum-alternative beats Ant throws his way.
